Title - There They Go-Go-Go!
Director - Chuck Jones
Released - 1956
Interesting Fact -- This was the first Wile E. Coyote/Road Runner cartoon to have consistent use of a yellow sky in the background.
Reason for Placement --
I'll go ahead and admit it, there are some Looney Tunes characters that I enjoy more than others, and Wile E. Coyote & the Road Runner have always ranked on the top. On the whole, There They Go-Go-Go! is a pretty good WEC/RR toon, though at times it seems a bit lackluster. The premise is there: Coyote sees bird, Coyote wants bird, Coyote builds trap, trap fails, repeat. And while the traps in this particular toon are fun, they just don't have the fun style that Wile E. showed in other toons... until the very end.
In the final trap, Wile E. puts a ton of boulders over a trap door, planning to release them when the Road Runner zips by underneath. However, when said-lunch shows up, Wile E. pulls the latch, and nothing happens. Finally fed up with failure, the frustrated coyote starts to jump on the rocks, and then actually grabs a long pole and starts poking at the boulders from underneath! As the rocks start to loosen, Wile E. suddenly stops, looks at the camera wide-eyed, and holds up a sign that says, "In Heaven's name - what am I doing?". Cue falling rocks.
I've always loved that moment, especially since we can all identify with times where we become so frustrated, so determined to get something done or to make it work, that we've actually had to take a step back and realize, "Wait, maybe this isn't such a good idea..." For poor Wile E., he finds out just a minute too late.
Great opening set-piece in which Wile E. crafts a mud bird, bakes it in a Navajo-style oven, then wrestles off a drumstick. The LMAO moment has him licking his chops just before he bites down and loses a tooth.
ReplyDeleteLOL, I've always loved that opening.
